The brand-and-model rule
Every appliance has a label — inside the fridge door, behind the washing machine, on the oven frame. Photograph it and attach it to your request, along with:
- What the appliance does or does not do, in plain words: does not spin, does not cool, trips the breaker, leaks from below.
- Any error code on the display — this is often the exact diagnosis.
- When it started, and whether it happens always or sometimes.
- A short video of the noise, if the problem is a noise. Nothing describes a grinding bearing better than the sound itself.
Repair or replace?
A useful rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new appliance, and the appliance is past the midpoint of its expected life, replacement usually wins. Ask the technician for the part's price and the labour separately — an honest answer to that question tells you whether they are advising you or selling to you.
Compare offers properly
Check whether the diagnosis visit is charged if you refuse the repair, whether the spare part is original or compatible, and whether the work is guaranteed for a period. Get the answers in the chat, in writing.
Safety line
Water heaters and gas appliances are not tinkering territory. For anything involving gas, insist on someone who does this professionally, and never accept a bypass of a safety device "to make it work for now".
