Write the Story, Not Just the Name
Use two or three sentences to explain what happened there, approximately when it happened, and why it mattered to the town.
Mention your source whenever possible: "My grandfather worked here," "According to the commemorative plaque," or "Documented in the town archives." Honest sources are always better than confident guesses.
Photograph the place as it exists today, including signs of age and decay. An authentic photo of a ruin often tells a stronger story than an old borrowed archive image.
If the location is on private property or is unsafe to enter, clearly mention that. Historic pins exist to preserve memory—not to encourage trespassing.
Let the Pin Start a Conversation
The best historic pins continue to grow over time. Someone adds a forgotten date, another corrects a name, someone else uploads a photograph from 1975.
Treat corrections as contributions, not criticism. When different versions of a local story exist—as they often do—record them both instead of insisting that only one is correct.
